You are:
A Senior Technical Writer who will communicate complex information clearly, concisely and accurately, and without relying on jargon. As a Technical Writer, involved in tasks such as: writing conceptual overviews and procedures, reading and writing example code, customer communication, release notes or FAQs. Technical Writers play a big part at Pitney Bowes. You are a link between Engineers, Product Managers and users, tying together many vital but disparate parts.
You are a Senior Technical Writer working on developer products, supporting Pitney Bowes’s premier Location Intelligence developer platform. This platform is Spectrum Spatial, a product suite that comprises a workflow designer, web services and a web mapping application. You are a solid communicator working with a diverse audience, including developers, workflow designers and users of web-based location analytics applications; this interaction may be through conceptual documentation, end-user guides and how to documents and also detailed developer guides containing code samples, API references, and other online materials, such as videos and blog postings.
You enjoy a combination of writing and some light-duty software development. You might have a background as a developer or QA engineer, and write as a hobby; or perhaps you are an experienced communicator or technical trainer who loves casual forays into code. This position will sit in Toronto, ON.
You will:
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Product Managers, Developer Relations and UX designers and other stakeholders to create and maintain high-quality documentation
  • Write, publish and maintain high-quality help content and user interface (UI) messaging.
  • Write technical documentation for developer audiences, such as API reference docs and developer guides
  • Manage the production and publishing of documentation.
  • Design and organize documentation sets for new APIs and developer products.
  • Edit, clarify, and proofread documents written by others, and coach non-writers on ways to improve their writing skills.
  • Manage complex documentation projects.
  • Supplement developer documentation with relevant sample code.
  • Collaborate with, and perhaps mentor other technical writers
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • Work with Agile development methodologies and fast delivery


Your background:
As a Senior Technical Writer, you have:
  • 3-6 years of relevant experience, such as technical writing, product documentation, or online publishing including experience with writing technical customer-facing materials
  • Experience with documentation tools like DITA, FrameMaker and Oxygen
  • Exposure to source code written in Java and/or JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of web mapping, GIS or location and spatial analytics
  • Familiarity with version control systems; Git and/or Subversion
  • BA/BS in Technical Communications, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Preferred Skills:
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • Experience and comfort with Agile development methodologies and fast delivery
  • Experience with topic-based, modular authoring and documentation, especially converting to topic-based content from traditional book models
  • Experience with remote collaboration, and teams with different cultural backgrounds
  • Experience with different forms of communication, including blogs, online portals and video material
