Senior Design Researcher At Loblaw Digital

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Job Description

At Loblaw Digital, we know that our customers expect the best from us. Whether that means building the best, most innovative online shopping experience, or designing an app that will impact the lives of people across the country, we’re up for the challenge. From our office in Downtown Toronto, we’ve created leading eCommerce experiences in the online grocery shopping, beauty, pharmacy, and apparel spaces, and we’re only just getting started.
The impact you'll make
In this role, you would be a part of the Design Research team mission to guide and inform the company on how to design and build high-quality human-centered products and experiences.
In this role you will work directly with colleagues across multiple functions (Product Management, Product Design, Engineering, Marketing, Leadership) to design and apply research methods which provide deep, actionable insights which can inform what our teams builds, how they should build it and how they can refine experiences to meet customer needs.
You will be responsible for framing questions, developing research plans, collecting data, synthesising and surfacing it to drive action through a variety of mediums (for example immersion sessions, presentations, workshops). Whilst you will primarily work on qualitative projects, you’re comfortable with synthesising insights from different sources to create the most actionable insights (for example transactional surveys, behavioural insights, secondary research sources).
You’ll be building a human-centered culture and work within one of our digital businesses to demonstrate the value of research. But you will also be a key member of our research practice, which we will continue building out together.
We’re excited for you to join us on our journey.

What you'll do

  • Identify, intake and prioritize research opportunities in collaboration with business operators. Owning the process of both proactively spotting friction in our customers’ experience but also receiving input from colleagues.
  • Frame research hypotheses and questions to ideate on research approaches that address these problems. You will select appropriate methodologies and lead the planning of the end-to-end process.
  • Conduct the end-to-end research process including recruitment, activity/discussion guide preparation and facilitation of a broad range of research methods which can address a user (including interviews, ethnography, diary studies, remote research methods, co-creation, surveys, experiments).
  • Collaborate closely with insight analysts or other practices to utilize data from available sources, including transactional survey feedback, behavioral data, secondary research.
  • Synthesize data and create actionable recommendations through collaboration with key partners that you’ve identified across the disciplines. Document and present research in a variety of compelling artifacts/mediums (including immersion sessions, presentations, workshops).
  • Drive action through from research; working closely with the Product Designers (within your business) to lead ideation sessions and continually build relationships with your key partners.
  • Contribute to building our research practice through thought leadership, processes, developing educational content and continually learning about new approaches in our industry.

Does this sound like you?

  • 5+ years of experience conducting and integrating user research into product designs and design practises;
  • A university degree in an analytical discipline or a human-centered discipline (Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Human Computer Interaction, Interaction or Experience Design)
  • Demonstrated understanding of the strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, including when and how to apply them during the product development process (grounded in UX design processes and tools);
  • By definition, you are collaborative. On any engagement you work to identify who you should partner with and ensure you actively bring your partners on your journey.
  • You are open to being flexible in research approaches, particularly in circumstances where you only have time for ‘just enough’ research.
  • Experience working with large scale data in multi-method studies;
  • Knowledge of user-centered design methods;
  • Experience prioritizing time between multiple projects and managing projects involving cross-functional disciplines.

  • Bonus Qualifications:
  • Visual and/or interaction design experience;
  • Experience with quantitative data collection and analysis;
  • Experience and interest in leading more junior researchers on projects;
  • Passion for emerging tech and trends in one or more of the: grocery shopping, beauty, pharmacy, and apparel spaces.
At Loblaw Digital, we seek great people to continually strengthen our culture. We believe great people model our values, are authentic, build trust and make connections. We’re able to keep innovating because our colleagues are passionate about their work and excited about the future of eCommerce.
You will get to work with some of the best digital minds and will have the support of world class technologies to craft products our customers will love!
Loblaw Digital recognizes Canada's diversity as a source of national pride and strength. We have made it a priority to reflect our nation’s evolving diversity in the products we sell, the people we hire, and the culture we create in our organization. Accommodation is available upon request for applicants with disabilities in the recruitment and assessment process and when hired.
In addition, we believe that compliance with laws is about doing the right thing. Upholding the law is part of our Code of Conduct – it reinforces what our customers and stakeholders expect of us.
