Director, Software Engineering At Loblaw Digital

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Job Description

Looking for a challenge? Good. Love an innovative work environment? Even better. At Loblaw Digital , we know that our customers expect the best from us. Whether that means building the best, most innovative online shopping experience, or designing an app that will impact the lives of people across the country, we’re up for the challenge. From our office in Downtown Toronto, we’ve created leading eCommerce experiences in the online grocery shopping, beauty, pharmacy, and apparel spaces, and we’re only just getting started. We’re able to keep innovating because our colleagues are passionate about their work and excited about the future of eCommerce. If you have big ideas, undeniable enthusiasm, and thrive in a collaborative, creative, and diverse group, we’ll get along just fine.

In this player/coach role you will assist the team in building, improving, and maintaining a world class fulfillment system for our Online Grocery platform. You will roll up your sleeves to lead a team of engineers in designing, developing, integrating, and testing a complex ecosystem dedicated to delighting customers with on-time, efficient access to their order. You should have extensive experience building an API-driven Java micro-services application, excellent communication skills, and a drive to make a significant impact in the ways Canadian shop. Expect to take ownership of a technical vision, to take the lead on key architectural decisions, to mentor a growing team, and to hold a high standard in code reviews and production availability.

Working closely with the Senior Director, Software Engineering, and acting as a member of the technology leadership team, the Director will ensure that our fulfilment platform is providing stability and efficiency for our online grocery system, while also keeping ahead of the ambitious growth targets for that business. You’ll lead and mentor a talented team of technical leads and developers, focusing on continuous improvement, software excellence, and maintaining a high performing development organization. In addition to our internal team, you will also be accountable for managing our outsourced development partners across onshore and offshore teams.

What You'll Do:

  • Leading and mentoring a high performing team in a rapid development environment.
  • Ensuring consistent, and timely delivery, of new digital experiences while driving good application design, scalability, development velocity, predictability and quality.
  • Ability to apply the right development approach – agile or blended – based on project and business needs and effectively coordinating the implementations across internal, partner and vendor teams.
  • Scaling our eCommerce solutions to serve millions of customers daily.
  • Communicate project status and issues in a concise and accurate manner to executives.
  • Collaborate with multiple business and technical teams to define and deliver complex features.
  • Anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints
  • Plan and manage multiple parallel projects
  • Work with the product management team to continuously improve our product development methodologies.
  • Recruit and retain top development talent.

Who You Are:

  • You have 2+ years of experience in a senior management or director level role, preferably in an eCommerce business, and you’re looking for a new challenge.
  • You’re always looking to support your team, to grow your next leaders both from a technical perspective, as well as communication skills.
  • You’re a developer at heart. You’re passionate about writing good software, and you’re experienced in making wise tradeoffs.
  • You love to get a group of talented engineers together to solve difficult problems. You wish you had more time to code, but you recognize that you now can have higher-leverage contributions for your team.
  • You are always learning and growing. Not one to rest on your laurels, you actively seek out things outside your comfort zone.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science required, advanced degree preferred.
  • Excellent understanding of the Java technology stack, especially as it relates to API services.
  • Excellent understanding of the agile principles and methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of the retail industry as it relates to eCommerce.
  • Strong inter-personal skills including ability to work in a cross-functional environment and communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive to clear action and ownership amongst large development teams.
  • Eye for talent and a history of building high performance development teams
  • A true leader – someone who enables and inspires their team to do their best work
  • Hands on technologist who can dive deep and hold their own with senior developers building a scalable product.
  • Demonstrated ability to harness the power of technology and people to accomplish big things.
  • Decisive, confident, and experience with influencing others.
  • Strong sense of urgency and personal commitment.
  • Professional services and/or start-up experience preferred.

How You’ll Succeed:

  • At Loblaw Digital, we seek great people to continually strengthen our culture. We believe great people model our values, are authentic, build trust and make connections.
  • If that sounds like you, and you are open-minded, responsive to change and up to the challenges provided in a fast-paced retail environment, apply today.
