The Director Customer Development leads the development, implementation and monitoring of strategic sales initiatives and direct tactical plans and program to achieve business objectives for assigned customers through leadership and effective team management. They are accountable for team vision, team structure, attracting and retaining top talent for the direct customer team as well as the cross functional Category, Finance and Retail Operations teams. This position is responsible for leading the team through 1- 3 year joint business plans, both in store and eCommerce, with customer’s key contacts and negotiation at the Sr. Director and Sr. VP level to drive volume and profit growth for Kimberly-Clark brands and customer categories. This role is responsible for implementing Kimberly-Clark brand strategies and tactics with the customer, leveraging insight creation, strategy development, and influencing customer strategy and plans that deliver market leading results. The Director of Customer Development must manage Sr. level customer relationships, category management, business planning and trade management utilizing cross functional resources and data sources. Also, it is expected, as a member of the Customer Development Leadership Team, that this role contributes to the development and implementation of strategic priorities for the Canadian team.


Key customers for this position are the Sr. Director and Sr. VP levels across Merchandising, Replenishment, Supply Chain, Marketing and eCommerce at the customer as well as Kimberly-Clark’s Business Teams, Category Management, Planning, Supply Chain, and Finance. These customers expect clear, succinct, compelling and timely communication that proactively identifies and capitalizes on opportunities to meet share expectations, net sales and profit.


This position reports to VP, Canada Customer Development and interacts internally with the Brand Teams, Customer Teams and other Customer Development staff. This position interacts externally with Customer personnel at the SR. Vice President and Sr. Director level.

  • Strong precise understanding of marketing dynamics and customer strategies across the classes of trade.
  • Lead assigned customer team and cross functional support team to achieve net sales, profit objectives and Market Share Growth. Establish K-C team and category vision with the customer, shape and deliver upon customer objectives.
  • Develop and gain commitment from customers on strategic joint business plans to deliver financial budgets, strategic objectives and brand objectives.
  • Lead the team through complex multi-million dollar negotiations annually, leveraging customer expectations to deliver differentiated K-C support and resulting market leading performance.
  • Lead the team to maximize trade spending to create efficiencies and deliver targets within assigned rates while maintaining controls on a sizable trade budget.
  • Own and develop strategic relationships at the Sr. VP and Sr. Director level across all functions within the customer including Merchandising, Logistics, Replenishment, eCommerce, Marketing and Operations.
  • Lead the development and implementation of Top-to-Top strategic engagements between Canada VP Sales, Canada GM and Sr. Executives with the customer.
  • Strong ability to clearly and precisely communicate orally and in writing to individuals and groups, including Canadian Marketing & Sales Strategy Directors; consistent engagement with Canadian & International Vice Presidents & Canadian General Manager.
  • Ability to communicate precise innovative Sales Customer Development business solutions to customers and team leaders.
  • Strong ability to quickly comprehend and influence appropriate cross functional departments with issues or problems.
  • Leverage Insights to Execution by leading the team through development of customer and category insights and turning those insights into strategic and tactical plans that deliver category growth and market leading growth for K-C Brands
  • Work with the Canadian retail team and broker to optimize retail execution supporting key business initiatives and objectives.
  • Provide leadership to ensure that Kimberly-Clark attracts, develops and retains the best people and fosters an environment which motivates a diverse team to fully use its capabilities in achieving desired business results.
  • Utilize the Performance Management process and a Culture of Coaching to motivate team members to continually improve performance and leadership skills as well as build a pipeline of future leaders.
  • Contribute to the achievement of business and personal objectives by seeking and responding to performance and development feedback, and by initiating personal development activities to enhance functional effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership to create an environment where all team members are respected and valued regardless of their individual differences, and are motivated to improve both their individual and team contributions to achieve desired business results and ensure the timely execution and follow-up of related administrative tasks, while ensuring the team is conforming to corporate, financial, sales, and selling expense policies and instructions.


Education required:

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.


At least 10 years of relevant and progressive management experience with at least 4-5 years of Team Leadership, extensive business knowledge, proven superior success in business management required (e.g., Sales Leadership, Sales Strategy, Brand Marketing Management, National Account Management, Finance, Category Development etc.)

Preferred Experience/Qualifications:

Complete knowledge in class of trade serviced by Canadian Customer Development, Kimberly-Clark organizational structure, brands and categories, sales and marketing procedures, human resources and financial policies and procedures. Knowledge of and experience with K-C planning process and ProMAX software is a plus.

Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, to individuals and groups. Ability to structure and manage multiple priorities and projects in a timely manner is required.


Expected to comprehend overall corporate, sales, marketing and general business objectives to ensure volume and contribution objectives are met.


Travel up to 10% of the work time. Travel may also include business travels via aircrafts and motor vehicles to various locations. May include prolong periods of sitting, typing, viewing computer/laptop screens, along with occasional bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, walking, climbing, twisting, stooping and standing.
