You will be a Summer Intern under JPL’s Instrument Software And Science Data Systems Section (398) and the Project Leadership And Management Group (398A). The work will be directly supporting NASA’s Planetary Data System (PDS).
The NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) is home to over 1.5 PB of planetary science data products, ranging from images to atmospheric and geosciences data, making it the richest data repositories for planetary science data in the universe. The PDS Engineering Node (EN) provides systems engineering support to the entire PDS, handling global aspects such as standards (data, software, documentation, operating procedures), technology investigations, coordination and development of system-wide software, coordination of data ordering and distribution, catalog development and implementation, and maintenance of the PDS catalogs. The PDS standards lie at the heart of all of it to ensure consistent description of planetary science data so that data providers, programmers, and end-users all know what to expect when creating and working with PDS files.

AIMS Plug-in Developer: The PDS EN is in the midst of a research and development task for moving some of our tools and services to the Amazon Web Services Cloud. The software service architecture we are designing in the cloud needs more tools retrofitted and plugged into the service so we can continue to grow the toolkit. The candidate will be responsible for taking new and existing tools, retrofitting the tools to meet the architectures interface requirements, and test and deploy this in AWS Lambda. The candidate will also be expected to think outside-the-box, be creative and self-driven, while functioning within an agile-like team environment.
Required Background/Skills/Courses: Java, Git, Unix.
Desired: Cloud Services experience, AWS Lambda, Python
PDSEN DevOps Engineer: The PDS EN is home to dozens of software tools/services and millions of lines of code. We then build and deploy this software every 6-months so these tools available to the science community around the world. The problem is this build and deployment process is largely manual and very time consuming. The candidate for this role loves to organize and streamline their work, and is interested in improving an organization that provides the tools necessary for scientists to make discoveries throughout the universe. The candidate will also be expected to think outside-the-box, be creative and self-driven, while functioning within an agile-like team environment.
Required Background/Skills/Courses: Required: Java, Unix, Git, Unit/Regression Testing.
Desired: Docker, Any CI/CD experience a huge plus, familiar with Jenkins
PDSEN Data Modeling Engineer: The PDS4 Information Model (IM) and related standards are the latest in the set of PDS standards developed to bring both the archiving process and use of the archived data into the modern era. The standard is built using XML, XML Schema, and XML Schematron, on top of a complex structure of object relationships captured in an ontology modeling tool. The candidate will be expected to become the apprentice to our Information Architect learning the ins-and-outs of the PDS4 Information Model, the generated artifacts, and associated standards and how they impact the PDS4 Information System. More broadly, the candidate must be have a skillset for and interest in complex ontologies, database design, and software development.
