    Position Summary

    Reporting to the Manager, Communication Services, the Communications Advisor provides senior-level expertise and service in all aspects of communications for the City. This includes managing the City's reputation, enhancing the corporate image, influencing behaviour, and cultivating awareness of and participation in the City's programs and services

    Key Duties and Responsibilities
    • Lead strategic communications planning for short- and long-term initiatives to promote the City’s programs and services, including implementing and executing strategies for both internal and external audiences
    • Provide communications expertise to senior staff and Council by advising on content, strategic direction, positioning and messaging of communications plans
    • Position Communication Services as a leader and partner by ensuring clients are well served and consulted throughout the communications planning process and by supporting the City in achieving business objectives
    • Promote research-driven analysis and evaluation as integral to strategic communications planning, providing insights and recommendations to clients and colleagues, and applying relevant learnings and data to increase effectiveness of communications initiatives
    • Advance modern communication practices, digital strategies and multimedia tools and tactics to support communications planning, media relations, issues management and public engagement
    • Lead cross-disciplinary project teams, working closely with clients, colleagues and stakeholders to accomplish shared goals
    • Work professionally with, and manages the work of, external vendors
    • Manage the communications portion of the City's projects and initiatives within prescribed timelines and budgets
    • Identify potential issues/situations that may impact the City's reputation, or that may have legal implications or potential for media exposure
    • Research and write issues notes and develop key messages for the Mayor, Council and senior staff regarding sensitive issues and/or significant events
    • Lead media relations activities, including researching, writing and issuing advisories, releases and pitches, and acting as media liaison and spokesperson as required
    • Coordinate communications in a crisis, from incident through response and recovery and participate in the City’s Emergency Operations Control Group as required
    Education and Experience
    • Degree in Public Relations, Corporate Communications, Journalism or related discipline
    • Minimum 5 years related experience
    Required Skills/Knowledge
    • Demonstrated expertise in strategic communication planning and evaluation for small and large scale projects
    • Superior writing and editing skills, a keen eye for detail and demonstrated experience in the production of a variety of print and digital communications products
    • Understanding of techniques, tools and research methods for effective community engagement
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe products
    • Working knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn) and other digital engagement tools
    • Strong consultative and persuasion skills
    • Ability to identify opportunities to proactively communicate information and promote City programs and services
    • Expertise in issues management and crisis communications, and as a media spokesperson/liaison
    • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, including the ability to work with clients, manage timelines, project budgets, vendors and expectations
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, collaboratively and courteously with colleagues, the media, public and officials at all levels
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality
    • Highly developed problem solving, troubleshooting and multitasking skills demonstrating creativity, resourcefulness, courage and tact
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines

    • Experience with web content management systems is an asset
    • Knowledge of photography, videography and related editing software is an asset
    • Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, and have access to a vehicle for use on corporate business (mileage compensated) and will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance upon hire
    • Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
