Position Overview
This position provides practical experience towards achievement of a Professional Engineering designation through opportunities that contribute to the Engineering and Public Works department as well as the Transportation department. The EIT performs work of varying levels of responsibility across several sections.

Compressed Work Week (based on 70 hours biweekly)
Your normal hours of work will typically be 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and an alternating Monday or Friday off work. This compressed schedule is the result of an extension of the standard 7-hour workday to 7.75 hours to so that your full biweekly hours are worked in nine days instead of ten within each two-week period. Variations to this schedule may be required based on job demand
Accredited Employer with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia The City of Richmond has been an Accredited Employer with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia since 2017. This accreditation ensures the City’s EIT program provides an environment where EITs are able to satisfy the association’s experience requirements when applying for their professional engineer (P.Eng.) designations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
  • Providing project management, technical support, and/or contract administration for:
    • Utility capital projects ranging in value from $100,000 to $10M
    • Transportation capital projects
    • Building capital projects
    • District energy infrastructure development
  • Performing detailed engineering design.
  • Performing functional transportation engineering design for capital projects.
  • Providing transportation planning support particularly for capital projects.
  • Reviewing traffic engineering studies.
  • Conducting site examinations and inspecting projects for accuracy and completion.
  • Procurement of consultant and contractor services.
  • Reviewing consulting engineer’s designs and reports.
  • Communicating and corresponding with consultants, City crews, private and City contractors, developers, private utility owners and regulatory agencies.
  • Providing technical assistance to other City divisions.
  • Administering and maintaining engineering specifications, procedures, and bylaws.
  • Reviewing development applications and servicing agreements and administering legal agreements.
  • Public Works operations and maintenance initiatives.
  • Asset management and long-term planning of City infrastructure, including water, sanitary, roads, drainage and dikes.
  • Liaising with other City divisions and the public on a daily basis as well as during annual events such as the Capital Works Open House and Public Works Open House.

Education & Experience
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous work experience in a Civil, Electrical, Transportation or Mechanical Engineering setting is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and skill in using computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, with the ability to apply computer applications to engineering projects.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and contribute to team building initiatives.
  • Ability to quickly learn new procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts over the phone and in person.
  • Able to prioritize workload, adjust to changing priorities, and effectively meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use REDMS or a similar records management system.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.

Licences & Certificates & Registrations
  • Must be eligible for registration as an EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.

Working Conditions and Effort
Duties are performed in an office environment, at City Hall, City Hall Annex, and/or the Public Works Operations Yard. Some construction site visits, inspections, and field work may be required.
