Permit Technician At City of Redmond

Location: Redmond, Washington

Job Description

Permit Technicians process planning, building and fire permits, and respond to customer inquiries at the Development Services Center counter. The following are some of the position responsibilities; please review the Permit Technician classification description for more detail.

Essential Functions:

  • Accept applications, track and assist in all aspects of the permit process
  • Provide detailed information to customers and verify necessary approvals
  • Calculate building size and advise applicants of permit fees
  • Review plans and documents for completeness and intake
  • Use critical thinking and enter file and permit records' data
  • Create reports
  • Handle daily receipt of payments, balance and report financial data
  • Coordinate permit intake reviews by multiple departments

UPON CLOSER LOOK

The Permit Technician requires:
Knowledge of:

  • Algebra and geometry mathematical calculations and cash handling principles
  • Record keeping, research and analytical techniques
  • Terminology and codes related to the building trade
  • Basic principles and practices of land use, zoning, building and engineering helpful
Skill in:
  • Interpersonal relations and providing excellent customer service
  • Conflict resolution
  • Recognizing significance of technical details and when to notify appropriate personnel
  • Using computer software including the EnerGov permitting system, MS Office Suite and a computerized cash receipting system (Quadrant/Tyler System)
Ability to:
  • Transition between multiple computer screens to enter data.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and write legibly
  • Read and interpret maps and blueprints, and review for completeness and compliance
  • Work closely with the public, and other City departments and agencies
  • Deal with constant interruptions
  • Work with little supervision and independently and as part of a team
  • Work under stress and meet deadlines as required.
  • Work on a high volume of permit applications on a daily basis.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES

Education and Experience:

  • Required to have high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of technical experience in customer service, which includes answering multiple phone lines, staffing a front desk, providing in-person assistance to members of the public, reviewing forms for completeness, navigating computer programs, entering information into database, and maintaining organized files.
  • Prefer previous experience as Permit Technician experience from another jurisdiction and knowledge of International Building Code Permits.
  • Public sector accounting experience preferred, or any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Licenses and Requirements:
  • Valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire, and a driving record that meets City standards.
  • Obtain certification as permit technician within six (6) months of date of hire.

Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed in an office environment. May be required to stand at a counter for long periods of time when assisting customers. Lift and carry plans, boxes, and large books usually not exceeding 30 lbs.

Interviews are tentative scheduled for the following dates: June 26 telephone interviews, July 8 interviews and exercise, July 11 finalists interviews.

The City may review existing application pools to fill this position, or use this pool to fill future vacancies.

Finalists will be required to complete a Background Authorization form to have a thorough background investigation conducted.
