You are responsible for performing field inspections during the construction of new utilities, roads and subdivisions, making quality checks, communicating with developer's representatives on-site regarding deficiencies, and preparing written reports. Providing a high level of customer service, you will investigate and advise on private access applications on public roads, process applications and prepare connection fee estimates. Under general supervision, independence of action is required. Unusual problems are referred to and discussed with senior staff before acting.
This role will provide assistance to the Division under the direction of senior staff. The incumbent will assist with quality control, data management, and review as-built drawings as required. Performs general office duties in or order to assist the department in completion of various engineering and operational activities. Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications: Enrolled in a post-secondary Civil Engineering program (diploma or degree) and completion of the first year of the program. Experience in Civil Engineering technology, working in the Engineering field or equivalent construction industry experience including survey, construction layout, estimating, or construction labourer for industrial/institutional facility projects. Previous experience reading as-built drawings, blueprints, and using MS Excel are desirable. Knowledge of civil servicing components in industrial/institutional facilities. Knowledge of development servicing for industrial, commercial, institutional, multi-family and residential development. Mathematical aptitude in comparing/rationalize elemental/component cost breakdown(s) and estimated service life. Ability to interpret civil engineering drawings, studies, infrastructure reports and manuals for municipal infrastructure. Ability to interpret and identify inconsistencies with inventories, engineering plans and specifications and physical components in civic and utility facilities. Ability to read and understand operating and maintenance manuals, historic cost data and estimating guides. Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills in communicating with other staff. Ability to use skills in organization, prioritization, and time management to effectively handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to maintain an effective and positive working relationship with others to help create a proactive and motivated team environment. Physically capable to perform and carry-out field work. Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply relevant computer programs to perform the work, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, database applications, Adobe, and scanning programs. AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience would be an asset. Valid BC driver's license, full privilege Class 5.
This four (4) month term position starts in January 2019 and offers a possibility of extension. Overtime may be required.
This term position offers a wage of $27.15 per hour as well as 12% in lieu of benefits.
