Senior Staff Accountant At CITY OF MOUNT RAINIER

Location: Mount Rainier, Maryland

Job Description

The Senior Staff Accountant position is responsible for serving as a team member in the Department of Finance and ensuring the department creates accurate and timely financial records for the City of Mount Rainier.

The position requires through knowledge of principles and practices of accounting, and thorough knowledge of accounting terminology, methods, and City, state, and deferral payroll and related regulations. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and standards, and audit practices is required.

The Senior Staff Accountant must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department supervisors, employees, vendors and the general public. Additionally, the Senior Staff Accountant must have the ability to prepare, analyze, and evaluate complex financial reports while communicating ideas effectively both orally and in writing.

Staff Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Provides information to other departments regarding purchasing, payroll, and accounting matters.
  • Prepares bank reconciliations.
  • Maintains general ledger, chart of accounts, balance sheets, revenues, expenditures, capital accounts, etc.
  • Reconciles special accounts funds.
  • Compiles daily and monthly reports to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Performs various financial and budgetary functions such as balancing accounts receivable, posting revenues and expenditures.
  • Conducts internal operational audit studies for various City functions, including the reporting of procedural analysis and recommended improvements.
  • Assists independent auditors with the review of the City financial records.
  • Prepares a variety of financial reports, responds to inquiries from other City officials and the general public.
  • Assists in the new and modified/enhanced systems implementations and upgrades, and provides training to City staff in system use and procedures accordingly.
  • Audits and balances week check run, maintains check log, performs check signing functions, investigates and issues stop payment requests, determines if re-issuance is warranted.
  • Participates in all aspects of processing City-wide payroll and prepares detailed reports.

Key Qualifications ? Experience and Education

  • A conferred Bachelor?s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field. Master?s preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, auditing or budget analysis preferably for a public sector agency; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Advanced skills using Excel.

Work Authorization

This position requires submission of a background check, drug test, credit check, and authorization to work in the United States.
