Position Summary

The Vice President of Strategic Business Development is responsible for driving all business development initiatives to include the exploration, expansion, development, and management of business opportunities.

As VP of Strategic Business Development, you will develop a strategy to drive business development activities that deliver diversified revenue for COH. You will identify, incubate, and develop new opportunities to partner with strategic stakeholders across the healthcare marketplace. You will lead product-related business development activities across COH. In this role, you will be responsible for structuring and developing custom agreements and new templates for business initiatives to formalize new relationships with new and existing partners. Partnerships with these organizations may include licensing (excludes drug, device, diagnostics), joint-launch, acquisitions, commercialization, etc. secured through varying types of business structures and legal agreements.


You will develop deep relationships with partners including, but not limited to, health systems, technology and digital companies, healthcare service organizations, and other organizations that are key for advancing our mission of discovery and delivering exceptional patient care, and commercialization initiatives. Additionally, you will bring industry and technical experience, strategic perspective, excellent business development skills, the ability to clarify and summarize complex issues and attention to detail. You also possess distinctive analytical skills regarding technical and financial issues with partners and the ability to effectively influence and communicate cross-functionally with all levels of management.

You bring experience in business development in health applications and have communication and people management skills, the ability to clarify and summarize issues, business development skills, and attention to detail. You possess analytical skills regarding contractual, technical, and financial issues with partners and the ability to influence and communicate cross-functionally with all levels of management. You will create partnership leads and structuring, developing, managing custom agreements and new templates for initiatives to formalize win-win relationships with partners. Additionally, you will help unblock teams, working cross-functionally, and provide mentorship to a broad set of roles inside and outside of your team.


Key Responsibilities include:
  • Ensures that initiatives and projects are prioritized and aligned with business needs and strategy.
  • Responsible for identifying opportunities for expansion, margin growth, and synergies which align with the organization’s strategic development goals.
  • Develop, structure, negotiate and sign new partnerships through sourcing, framing, or vetting with strategic partner prospects.
  • Work with leadership and decision-makers to explore, frame, and operationalize partnership strategies for COH (i.e. potential acquisitions, partnerships, investments, licensing, and other strategic growth opportunities).
  • Prepares and oversee the development of business plans assuring their accuracy and comprehensiveness.
  • Develops and communicates the strategic business proposals to obtain executive leadership and Board support for proposed business development initiatives.
  • Analyzes industry dynamics and the competitive landscape and identifies opportunities for expansion in key growth markets and regions.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Must have 8 years of experience in business development, product management, partnership development, or similar practical experience.
  • Must have 4 years of experience in a product, partnerships or marketing function within the healthcare industry.
  • Must have experience identifying partners, negotiating, analyzing, and structuring complex agreements.
  • Must have experience in strategic business development, structuring and negotiating agreements, technology and/or partnerships strategy development.
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of strategic planning and business planning processes including financials, particularly as they relate to healthcare.
  • Able to identify business challenges and translate them into hypotheses, research needs, and/or internally led solutions.
  • Bring answers that drive/influence strategic decisions and long-term thinking with key business leader.
  • Be a great collaborator/thought partner, and be comfortable working independently managing end-to-end process internally/externally with partners, from concept to conclusion.
  • Independent, strategic thinker, capable of holding opposing views—yet decisive and able and willing to roll-up sleeves to accomplish the work.
  • Knowledge of health plan economics; strategy development, business planning and marketing methodologies; forecasting and scenario building techniques; integrated physician-hospital organizational structures/relationships and physician organization models.
  • Strong contract negotiation skills.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of acute care hospital and health care management methods including financial management practices, and knowledge of local, regional and general health care market trends.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, project management and executive management skills. Demonstrated sound financial leadership (including budgeting and finance).
  • Superior interpersonal communication and facilitation skills – an effective leader who relates well with physicians, care providers, administration and boards of directors.
  • Experienced at facilitating resolution of conflicts and grievances, handling highly charged problems and situations in a calm and objective manner.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with sensitive medical-legal and professional subjects.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
