Director, Digital Philanthropy At City of Hope

The Office of Philanthropy’s vision is to support this life-saving work by being known institutionally and nationally as a model of excellence among elite fundraising programs. Recent recruitments of nationally and internationally renowned faculty offer advancement leaders new opportunity for partnership among philanthropy, research and patient care.
The Director of Digital Philanthropy (DOD-DP) reports directly to the Sr. Director, Digital Philanthropy. The DOD will help ensure the fundraising success of the Office of Philanthropy through a number of executive-level responsibilities. To this end, we invest in our staff through the Team Activation Program (TAP) initiative. This initiative increases the effectiveness of our team through focused transparency & accountability, building trust within teams; training & development; celebrating innovation & risk taking; enhancing team communications and removing roadblocks to maximize activation. The TAP initiative ensures that the Office of Philanthropy is poised to move quickly, effectively and efficiently to maximize opportunities on behalf of City of Hope.
Specifically, the DOD-DP, under the direction of the SDOD-DP, is responsible for assisting in building, leading, growing and stewarding a national online/digital donor program consisting of varying donor and prospective donor audiences with the goals of raising direct revenue and fueling our national individual donor pipeline. This program will build on City of Hope’s rich, 100+ year old history of outreach through a national digital philanthropy strategy that helps create awareness, involve, and cultivate donors and prospective donors. The Digital Philanthropy program will continue to develop a comprehensive digital platform for all donors to engage with and to play a highly integrated part with City of Hope’s individual donor pipeline efforts. These efforts are focused on identifying individuals who are interested in financially contributing to advance COH’s critical work in cancer and diabetes research as well as a model of compassionate care that can inform institutions worldwide.
Key Responsibilities include:
  • Ensure department meets annual activity and financial performance metrics.
  • Manage, analyze and implement program to ensure cost effectiveness.
  • Oversee program strategy, management and day to day operations of the ourHope DIY (peer to peer) fundraising platform; including interfacing with all external fundraiser/donors as first line of contact and relationship manager for ourHope page creators, provide fundraiser support and coaching, develop marketing and outreach strategies, direct agency efforts for marketing campaigns and implement strategies with a focus of increasing revenue and adoption across identified donor groups.
  • Identify and manage key digital philanthropy donors and ourHope fundraisers with a goal of increasing philanthropic commitments.
  • Lead, develop and implement direct response digital campaigns (email, SMS, digital ads, social media, print, etc) including giving days, special digital-only campaigns and integrated campaigns for the Digital Philanthropy and Annual Giving teams.
  • Lead strategy and create new stewardship opportunities for digital annual level donors, lead email engagement series content and design.
  • Work with front line fundraisers within OOP and other staff on developing peer to peer fundraising campaigns targeted to specific groups and supporters. Direct digital strategy for overall campaign, including outreach and fundraising focus. Create P2P fundraising campaign and pages, make edits and updates and provide reports for colleagues. Serve as secondary relationship manager for external fundraiser/donors providing fundraising coaching and support as necessary.
  • Grow and manage the SMS program focusing on adoption, subscribers, content and integration with other channels.
  • Create and manage fundraising reporting structure for the Digital Philanthropy department, track revenue, budget and key fundraising metrics across all channels.
  • Oversee vendor relationships and contracts including relationship with direct response/marketing agency, digital design agency and SMS vendor.
  • Manage, track and administer email production for the Annual Giving, Employee Giving and Digital Philanthropy teams including review of all materials, segmentation, audience calculations, managing production calendar, BCR approvals, QA testing and issue mitigation.
  • Work with Legal, Marketing and Communications, and other key COH areas to ensure legal and brand compliance.
  • Manage, coach and train early career professionals in the Digital Philanthropy internship program with a special focus on skill development, workplace culture and project management.
  • Oversee and directly manage department paid interns (contract temp PT employees)
  • Indirect supervision of the Digital Philanthropy coordinator.
  • Potential for additional direct reports as program and department grows.
  • Manage, coach and train early career professionals in the Digital Philanthropy internship program with a special focus on skill development, workplace culture and project management.
  • Oversee and directly manage department paid interns (contract temp PT employees).
  • Indirect supervision of the Digital Philanthropy coordinator.
  • Potential for additional direct reports as program and department grows.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty, staff, volunteers, fundraisers, donors and prospects to support fundraising initiatives for COH priorities.
  • Provide digital strategy recommendations to OOP staff and front-line fundraiser to enhance campaigns and initiatives.
  • Participate in meetings, search committees, task forces, and other special projects.
  • Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles, and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact, and strong communication skills.
