Part-time Transit Bus Operator At City of Highland Park. IL

Location: Highland Park, Illinois

Job Description

  • Involves all duties and responsibilities with transit vehicle operation. Duties include carrying out those functions pertaining to the safe, courteous, and efficient operation of assigned transit vehicles on routes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, employing defensive driving techniques, maintaining professional courtesy while under stress, making public address announcements, properly answering questions and solving transit-related concerns of passengers, and exercising prudent judgment under a variety of constantly changing operating conditions.
  • Completing reports to facilitate recordkeeping (Trip Sheets, Maintenance, Accidents, Safety Test)
  • Performs pre-trip inspection of transit bus for mechanical problems prior to beginning scheduled run. This includes conducting an external/internal visual inspection of the transit bus and pre-testing all necessary equipment, operating/safety devices, and transit bus controls for use while in service. Also conducts an internal visual inspection at the end of revenue service to collect and turn-in lost items.

Education and Experience

Education:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, preferred. Good communications skills, (written and oral form). Perform basic mathematical functions.

Experience:
Two years experience Bus Operation and Transit Systems. Ability to communicate with the public in a courteous and professional manner is essential.

Certification or license:
Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with a passenger endorsement and air-brake qualified and an Illinois Secretary State certified abstract record of safe driving for 5 years, or equivalent. Must meet and maintain all DOT physical examination requirements including drug and alcohol screening.

Safety Functions:

  • Becomes familiar with and observes all applicable safety policies and procedures.
  • Immediately reports all unsafe conditions.
  • Keeps work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards.
  • Obeys and adheres to all safety rules and established work procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate physical fitness to perform essential job functions.

Work Environment:
A standard fixed-route transit bus, powered by a diesel engine with normal engine noise, operating on City streets.

Bloodborne Pathogens:
No exposure anticipated.

Tools and Equipment Used:
The position requires the ability to operate the following equipment: a 30 to 40 foot PACE bus; operation of a destination sign; a wheelchair lift, and a mobile radio.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, talk and hear while operating the bus; to occasionally reach to operate the farebox and the radio; and to secure the wheelchairs into the restraints prior to moving the bus.

Ability to remain aware of traffic conditions in all directions.
