Job Summary

As a Hamilton Police Constable, your role will be to serve and protect in partnership with our communities. You must be able to build relationships in the community, show sensitivity to others, and demonstrate concern for the needs of all regardless of race, culture, or background.

General Duties

  • Improve and maintain the safety, security, and quality of life for residents of the City of Hamilton through the application of proactive community-based and problem-solving policing methods
  • Preserve the peace
  • Prevent crimes and other offences, and provide assistance and encouragement to other persons in their prevention
  • Assist victims of crime
  • Apprehend criminals and other offenders and others who may lawfully be taken into custody
  • Lay charges and participate in prosecutions
  • Execute warrants that are to be executed by police officers and perform related duties
  • Perform the lawful duties that the Chief of Police assigns

To be considered for a Police Constable - New Recruit position candidates must:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Have a Grade 12 High School Diploma, or the approved equivalent
  • Have a valid Class G Driver's Licence, with no more than six (6) accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges
  • Have a current Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate of Results, including current Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) throughout the recruitment process; visit the Applicant Testing Services (ATS) website at www.applicanttesting.com for further details and/or see the Hamilton Police PREP Test on YouTube for a video demonstrating the components of the PREP test; currently serving police constables are exempt from this requirement
  • Have a valid Standard First Aid certificate and valid CPR certificate (Basic Rescuer Level C) by the time you receive an offer of employment
  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the job, having regard for their own safety and the safety of members of the public, and maintain a good level of physical fitness
  • Meet medical, vision, and hearing standards outlined by the Constable Selection System (review the Medical Requirements for Candidates on the Ministry of Community Safety Correctional Services website at www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca)
    • Vision standards are as follows:
      • uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/40 (6/12) binocularly (both eyes open); or
      • corrected visual acuity of at least 20/20 (6/6) binocularly; and
      • there are minimum requirements regarding refractive surgery, farsightedness (hyperopia), colour vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. With regards to laser surgery and Intra-Ocular lenses, acceptable, but applicants must meet specific standards.
    • Hearing standards are as follows:
      • hearing is acceptable if the applicant is able to hear tones at the following frequencies and related decibel levels:
      • four-frequency average (500, 1000, 2000, 3000 Hz) of 25 dB HL;
      • thresholds at none of these single frequencies shall exceed 35 dB HL and thresholds at 4000 Hz shall not exceed 45 dB HL.
      • candidates may also be required to undergo a speech recognition test as part of their hearing assessment.
  • Be of good moral character and habits, meaning that they are an individual other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity
  • Have no criminal record for which a pardon has not been received (applicants must obtain a pardon if they have any criminal convictions under a federal statute)
  • Have strong English communication and comprehension skills; additional languages are an asset
  • Pass a security clearance as well as a background investigation, which includes education, employment, personal history, credit, and reference checks, as well as a home visit

Desirable Qualifications (not mandatory):

  • Ties to Hamilton by virtue of having lived, worked, attended school, or have family/friends living in Hamilton
  • Post-secondary College or University graduate
  • Commitment to continuous learning/self-improvement within the past 5 years (e.g. post-secondary courses, workshops, seminars, or any ongoing personal development activity)
  • Commitment to community involvement within the past 5 years (e.g. volunteering)
  • Stability in work and/or education within the past 5 years (e.g. engaged in schooling or demonstrated stability in employment)
  • Strong attention to detail (e.g. do not exclude yourself as a potential candidate by submitting a poorly presented application with spelling, grammar, or accuracy errors)

Recruitment Process:

  • Application/Resume Review – You must have a current OACP Certificate including a current PREP in order to apply, and you will need to maintain these certifications throughout the recruitment process; any applicants with an expired OACP/PREP at any stage of the recruitment process will have their applications put on hold until certification is obtained
  • Pre-Background Questionnaire and Local Focus Written Composition (at this stage applicants will be required to provide all supplementary information/documentation; see our website for further details and copies of the necessary forms)
  • One-on-One Local Focus Interview (LFI) and Psychological Testing (MMPI-2 and 16PF)
  • Behavioural Based Essential Competency Interview (ECI)
  • Psychological Assessment Interview
  • Background Investigation
  • Conditional Offer of Employment subject to completion of full Medical Examination

Subsequent tests and assessments are dependent upon successful completion of the previous tests and assessments.
