The Hamilton Police Service is now hiring for our Courts Part-Time Special Constable Pool. The deadline to apply is March 12, 2019.


Job Title: Part-Time Special Constable, Courts

Location: John Sopinka Court House (45 Main St E, Hamilton, ON), may be required to respond to other locations, as necessary

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, working eight (8) hour shifts, starting anywhere between 7:00 am and 11:00 am

Salary: Starting at $ 31.61 per hour, PLUS 14% in lieu of benefits and 4% vacation pay

Status: Part-time Regular and Temporary as required

The Hamilton Police Service (HPS) is currently looking to fill Part-time Special Constable positions in the John Sopinka Court House, or one of our other Court Facilities.


JOB SUMMARY


Under the direction of the Special Constable Supervisor, Court Security, the Special Constable is responsible for the care, control, and transportation of prisoners, and the overall security of the assigned court facilities.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?


The Part-Time Special Constable ensures the security and control of prisoners, the court rooms, cells, and adjoining areas. Some duties may involve physical and mental challenges, while maintaining a respectful and professional demeanor, and include having physical contact with members of the public and the prisoner population (e.g. wanding, monitoring of cells, prisoner movement). Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring the security and control of prisoners
  • Monitoring Cell areas (maintaining visual, audible and electronic monitoring)
  • Searching & classifying new prisoners, securing seized items, and completing Records of Arrest, and reporting
  • Searching persons at court facilities, utilizing the walkthrough metal detectors and handheld wands
  • Daily searches: Court rooms, cells, and adjoining areas
  • Making arrests and completing necessary paperwork
  • Transporting prisoners between courts, detention centres, holding areas, and medical facilities (including out of town escorts)
  • Assisting all levels of the judicial system


WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IT?


  • Education: Have Secondary school completed; or equivalent
  • Minimum six (6) months of previous related experience
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • No criminal record for which a pardon has not been received
  • Must be in good physical and medical condition, and capable of handling difficult prisoners
  • Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal skills, adaptability skills, and communication skills
  • Be a contributing team member who is trustworthy and always acts with integrity and self-control


LICENCES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Currently possess a valid Class G Driver's Licence with no more than six (6) accumulated demerit points
  • Possess a current Standard First Aid certificate and current CPR certificate (Basic Rescuer Level C)
  • Possess a valid OACP Certificate of Results, including valid/current PREP (Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police)

OR

  • Be able to complete the HPS PREP Fitness Test, without shuttle run. Successful candidates must pass a PREP test during the recruitment process (see Hamilton Police PREP Test on YouTube for further details https://bit.ly/2tzso1i).
