FORENSIC VIDEO ANALYST

Job Title: Forensic Video Analyst

Reports to: Detective Sergeant, Forensic Services Branch

Primary Job Location: Central Police Station, 155 King William St, Hamilton, ON

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; flexibility required

Salary Range: $65,934 to $77,572 per annum (As of January 1, 2017)

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Detective Sergeant of the Forensic Services Branch, the Forensic Video Analyst will examine and analyze audio/video recordings for the purposes of developing, enhancing and clarifying evidence. The Forensic Video Analyst must be willing to attend and successfully undertake the necessary course(s) and training to obtain the credentials required to become a Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association (LEVA) Certified Forensic Video Technician, or professional equivalent.

GENERAL DUTIES

The Forensic Video Analyst is responsible for tasks related to video/photography as outlined below.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Arranging and photographing and/or video-recording police personnel, special events, presentations, etc
  • Extracting, archiving, and maintaining digital images/video for various operational purposes
  • Using various hardware/software to duplicate video/audio in analogue and digital tape or other data media/formats
  • Attending external locations to download video for analysis
  • Downloading video files from CCTV systems, custody/cell videos and taxis using relevant technology and/or seizing physical evidence
  • Processing and transcoding video into standardized, usable formats, using forensic best practices
  • Transferring and securing digital media for permanent retention, and transferring digital images to CD/DVD/external hard drives for court disclosures,
  • Scanning and processing digital images, and retrieving failed, lost, or faulty digital images
  • Documenting and maintaining process logs using a variety of software (e.g. Adobe Premiere Photoshop, Excel etc.)
  • Attending court for video, image and audio file validation, and providing evidence regarding the retrieval and processing of digital media
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of new technologies in photographic and video/CCTV equipment and techniques, and keeping video/photographic skills current with all related equipment and systems utilized by the Service, and in the greater community.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: Minimum three (3) year Community College Diploma focused on television/ film/communications media production, including digital imaging/video post-production editing. Training in photography is an asset.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum one (1) year related practical work experience with CCTV cameras and video/digital imaging. Training or experience in the processing of video for investigative purposes would be an asset.


REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to import/view/extract images from a given video using common CCTV viewing programs
  • Ability to process/enhance/clarify images using an appropriate level of processing software
  • Superior skills with Adobe Photoshop CS 6 or later, and Adobe Premiere or AVID Media Composer, or similar video editing software (e.g. Sony Vegas)
  • Must be experienced in processing digital images, as well as having a basic knowledge of the principles of photography, and the use of a digital Single-lens Reflex (SLR) camera.
  • Must have advanced computer knowledge/skills, and be familiar with the operation of computer-based editing and video processing systems
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft (MS) Office Word and Excel for documentation and tracking purposes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Effective team player; must be able to work effectively with all members of the HPS, other Services/agencies, and members of the community.
  • Must have good organizational, electronic filing, and documentation skills, and be able to produce accurate work.
  • Must be a self-directed, and capable of working with limited supervision.
  • Must be a continuous/life-long learner, who is able to quickly and successfully research and learn new related technologies and techniques in both self-learning and formal learning environments.
  • Must possess a valid Class G Driver's Licence, or the equivalent, with no more than six (6) accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges.
  • Must be willing to become a Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association (LEVA) Certified Forensic Video Technician, or professional equivalent.
