Solid Waste Equipment Operator At City of Goodyear, AZ

Location: Goodyear, Arizona

Job Description

Job Description Summary

The Solid Waste Equipment Operator provides solid waste collections with the use of rear loaders and grapple tractor. Interacts with the public providing customer service in resolving customer concerns and complaints.

Work requires 6 months of experience in a related field, high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Class B CDL driver's license.

The ideal candidate will need general knowledge of health and safety practices that the city follows as well as participate in all safety related activities and tasks. Maintain and ensure proper personal protective equipment requirements are followed during all work related activities and tasks. Have a general knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office (Excel and Word, knowledge of Access is a plus). Capable of utilizing a smart phone and computer to perform daily data entry. Able to communicate clearly with all residents and possess good customer service ethics. Support other divisions and co-workers within Public Works when necessary. Be able to provide bulk collections, county variance inspections, operate heavy equipment and be able to maintain a Commercial Driver's License. Be able to perform safety inspections on vehicles in accordance to Federal CDL guidelines and perform preventative maintenance on all sanitation equipment. Able to push/pull and lift up to 75 lbs. Capable of climbing in and out of vehicles, reaching, stooping and crouching several times a day. Able to work overtime or work an irregular schedule when requested.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
Only a limited number of the most highly qualified applicants meeting the City's requirements will be invited for an interview. Examination process for this position will include:
Panel Interview

Requirements

  • Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Community college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
  • Experience: Minimum six months experience in a related field.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License
  • Reading: Work requires the ability to read general correspondences, memorandums and letters, technical training manuals for equipment operation.
  • Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Writing: Work requires the ability to write City codes, general correspondences, memorandums and letters.
  • Managerial: Semi-Complex - Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
  • Policy/Decision Making: Moderate - The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. Work involving discretion is typically reviewed before finalized.
  • Technical Skills: Limited Application - Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Limited analysis and independent thinking is utilized.
  • Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate - In addition to the sharing of information, interactions at this level may also include providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies/procedures. In many of the interactions, contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

Essential Functions

  • Provides collections with the use of solid waste collection vehicles; performs routine vehicle/equipment maintenance; delivers and exchanges refuse and recycling containers. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides customer service by answering inquiries and instructing citizens on the proper disposal of waste.

12 Month Objectives

Within Three Months:

  • Perform proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the rear loader trucks
  • Complete SOP and JHA training on the rear loader trucks
  • Execute 50% of the bulk collection routes without aide from a coworker(s) or route book
  • Access and input daily route logs into the sanitation Access database daily
  • Become familiar with the City's Policies and Procedures
Within Six Months:
  • Conduct bulk collection inspections by issuing educational notices
  • Complete inspection documentation and perform inspection data entry
  • Execute 75% of the bulk collection routes without aide from a coworker(s) or route book
  • Perform all proper maintenance on all sanitation equipment
Within One Year:
  • Complete SOP and JHA training on the grapple tractors
  • Perform proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the grapple tractors
  • Complete SOP and JHA training on the tilt-frame roll-off truck
  • Perform proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the tilt-frame roll-off truck
  • Complete all city required annual training
  • Obtain a Class "A" Arizona Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
  • Attend a public outreach event
  • Execute 100% of the bulk collection routes without aide from a coworker(s) or route book
