Planning Technician I - Urban Design

The Planning Technician I is a multi-faceted role that primarily provides strategic technical support to the Urban Design Unit, Edmonton Design Committee (EDC) and the Naming Committee to ensure the overall efficacy of their objectives and duties. As the Planning Technician I, you will be responsible for the technical work of screening submissions, coordinating meetings and functioning as a key point of contact with various internal and external stakeholders. You will also be responsible for the technical work that supports the committees, as well as the strategic project work conducted by the Urban Design Unit such as design studies, assessments, analyses, workshops and engagement events.

Duties include:
  • Perform technical reviews of EDC submissions and working with applicants, file planners and development officers, to ensure submissions meet minimum technical criteria and are complete
  • Work with applicants to ensure presentations meet EDC requirements
  • Work with the lead urban designer to support the development and implementation of the annual EDC Workplan
  • Prepare the EDC Annual Report
  • Support lead urban designer liaison function as needed
  • Provide technical support to the naming committee including preparing and maintaining maps, researching names and preparing biographies, and maintaining various naming lists
  • Perform technical reviews of naming submissions and working with applicants to ensure submissions meet minimum technical criteria for completeness
  • Work with applicants to ensure presentations meet naming committee requirements
  • Support lead naming planner liaison function as needed
  • Continuous website management
  • Draft and preparation of graphics including maps, 3D models, and diagrams for Urban Design unit projects using technical software such as SketchUp, Geomedia, Adobe Creative Suite (Phoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and AutoCAD
  • Work with Planner IIs in the creation of visual information and graphical communication pieces, including presentation panel composition for the purposes of unit support in items such as public and stakeholder engagement meetings and workshops
  • Provide ongoing technical support to the lead urban designer / Naming planner related to the EDC and naming committee, as well as other ongoing planning and design assignments - as needed
  • Related duties as required
Qualifications :
  • 2 year diploma in Architectural Technology, Landscape Architectural Technology, Construction Engineering Technology or a related diploma program from a recognized Institute of Technology or Community College
  • 2 years directly related planning experience
  • Considerable knowledge of planning terminology, practices and procedures and standards and work methods applied within a planning environment
  • Knowledge of mathematics, statistics, data collection methods and related research techniques
  • Knowledge of computerized drafting, computer data gathering and analysis technique, and the ability to organize, create, modify and present effective presentations to target audiences
  • Knowledge of regulatory, advisory and other legislative bodies and their associated policies, procedures and regulations
  • Ability to deliver excellent customer service, and maintain effective working relationships with staff and external customers (eg. applicants)
  • Well organized and able to effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Demonstrated understanding of policies and procedures, including City regulations and procedures, necessary to undertake and complete assignments
  • Knowledge of data collection and related research techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present ideas to a variety of audiences
  • Strong working knowledge of Google and Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of Sketch-up and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is considered an asset
  • Strong aptitude for critical thinking and problem solving while working collaboratively
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a valid City Driver’s Permit is a requirement of the role

Salary: $36.808 - $46.267 (Hourly); $64,846.490 - $81,510.890 (Annually)
