Landscaping plays a key role in shaping our urban neighbourhoods and is a primary determinant of our city's environmental, financial and social sustainability. The development industry supports this sustainability by contributing —$13 million annually in landscaping infrastructure to the City of Edmonton, through the development process. To mitigate long term maintenance liabilities, the Landscape Technician II ensures developer contributed landscaping infrastructure meet all appropriate requirements prior to acceptance into City inventory.

The Landscape Technician II position is responsible for the monitoring and approval/rejection recommendation of landscaping infrastructure for all developer contributed assets within a designated geographic area. It is a highly independent role encompassing a variety of landscaping disciplines and projects of small to large scope.

The scope of work requires the use and application of skills and knowledge in all areas of standard landscaping construction methodology. This work requires the application of technical landscaping knowledge gained through experience, enabling incumbents to represent the City of Edmonton on technical matters related to landscape construction and installation.

Duties include:
  • Ensure the City of Edmonton is compliant with key business deliverables in the Servicing Agreements with private developers by conducting inspections within agreement deadlines
  • Complete CCC/FAC Inspections and Quality Assurance Documentation Review for the purpose of CCC/FAC approval
  • Conduct construction and establishment period audit and milestone inspections for landscape infrastructure of Developer contributed assets
  • Process applications for Construction Completion Certificates (CCC) / Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC)
  • Support the refinement of the landscape Design and Construction Specifications
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to subordinate and technical staff
  • Provide support and / or lead process improvements and updating of inspection documentation and metric collection
  • Exercise independent judgment in evaluating and supporting solutions to problems, particularly when modifications to existing design criteria and/or standard construction practice exist
  • Effectively communicate directly with both external stakeholders to provide service to industry customers, and internal stakeholders, to ensure timely deliverables
  • Provide information to the private development industry to solve unique problems and provide recommendations to move projects forward
  • Provide support for landscape design drawings reviews
  • Additional related duties as required

Qualifications

:
  • 2-year Technical Diploma in Landscape Technology, Urban Forestry, Horticulture or related, with coursework in soils
  • 5 years related landscape construction, including design and inspection experience
  • International Society of Arboriculture Arborist certification is an asset
  • Experience and knowledge in Arboriculture Best Management Practices is required
  • Knowledge of landscape and construction terminology, techniques and practices
  • Proven ability and experience interpreting landscape plans and specifications related to the work assigned
  • Ability to work out-of-doors for extended periods and under unfavourable weather conditions as required by the work assigned
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret landscape construction plans for the purposes of auditing and inspecting construction progress relative to City of Edmonton guiding documents (i.e. City of Edmonton Policies, Development Agreement, Landscape Inspection Guideline, Landscape Design and Construction Specifications, Topsoil Specifications, etc)
  • Knowledge of landscaping construction practices/methodology, landscape design principles, and urban forestry protection techniques
  • Technical plant knowledge with the ability to identify weeds, pests, and diseases
  • Proven ability to conduct tree evaluations and assessments
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build working relationships with the development industry stakeholders (consultants, developers, contractors and other internal City of Edmonton staff)
  • Excellent communication, technical writing, organizational and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated computer software proficiency including CAD, Microsoft Office, digital filing systems, Google Docs, Gmail, SAP and SLIM Strong attention to detail with the ability to verify and assess documentation
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license or operator’s licensing equivalent. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s Permit is a requirement of this position
