Event Attraction Strategist At City Of Edmonton

Edmonton has been recognized globally as a leading host city of national and international sport and cultural events. These events bring economic, reputation and social benefits that help achieve the City’s goal of diversifying the local economy and building a more engaged, inclusive and connected community.
A key mandate of the Partnership & Event Attraction section within the Community and Recreation Facilities Branch, is to work in partnership with Edmonton Tourism to attract events to Edmonton. We are looking for an individual with the skills, experience and passion to continue to advance our event attraction efforts on a temporary basis. The Event Attraction Strategist works closely with colleagues in the Corporation, Edmonton Events team and local organizing committees to identify events to bid on, and developing bids and securing events for our city.
Responsibilities of this position include:
  • In partnership with Edmonton Tourism, to implement the Major Event Strategy: Edmonton Events Sport and Cultural Attraction Plan to guide the attraction of national and international events to Edmonton, ensuring the alignment and integration with both internal and external partners to ensure successful outcomes
  • Based on the strategy, make recommendations to leadership on an events roadmap, direction and funding
  • Support Edmonton’s bid to become a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
  • Collaborate in the oversight of marketing and communication plans to support implementation of the major event attraction strategy
  • Monitor current and developing trends and provide recommendations as to how it impacts the City’s major event attraction strategy
  • Contribute to the development of City of Edmonton sponsorship agreements including the identification of benefits to help advance the City and achieve lasting community legacies
  • Support efforts to advance and build strong, strategic partnerships with key large event venues in Edmonton, working collaboratively with external partners to facilitate flow of information, understanding of civic requirements, policies and procedures
  • Represent the City as required on committees related to major events occurring in these large venues
  • Provide leadership in managing and resolving issues that arise related to event attraction, large venues, and sponsorship
  • Build meaningful relationships with other City colleagues and business units to broker and advance opportunities for event attraction, operations, programming, services and coordination with large venue partners

Qualifications

:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Recreation Administration, Public Relations, Commerce, Business Administration or an equivalent recognized degree
  • A minimum of 7 years' professional experience which includes a demonstrated competency in event management, community building, corporate social responsibility, dealing with grants and funding, sponsorship management, negotiation and administration of agreements and contracts and organizational development and capacity building
  • Experience working as part of a team involved in hosting of national and international events is an asset
  • Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing, particularly to support writing of bid documents and Council reports
  • Ability to negotiate and represent the department and corporation with other agencies including local organizing committees and government departments
  • Well developed communication skills to build strong, credible relationships and partnerships with other orders of government and event producers to advance event attraction efforts
  • Experience working with evaluation tools that help analyze and assess community legacy, including building alignment with outcomes identified in the Live Active Strategy
  • Achievement focused, recognize and act on event attraction opportunities, demonstrating persistence and perseverance to overcome obstacles
  • Creative, innovative and forward thinking team player, with sound and confident decision making abilities and the ability to work under pressure to meet challenging deadlines
  • Passionate about Edmonton and event attraction, and can clearly see the correlation with how event attraction helps build Edmonton locally, nationally and globally
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve issues and facilitate effective problem solving processes and complex issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in both thought and action, in research, analytical techniques, issue identification and problem solving are required
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, organization, time management and prioritization skills required
  • Limited travel outside Edmonton may be required
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Salary: $44.339 - $55.726 (Hourly); $78,114.230 - $98,175.280 (Annually)
