The Waste Services Branch of City Operations is currently looking for Environmental Engineer -Water to provide expertise in managing the quality, quantity and discharge of groundwater, surface water and leachate at all Waste Services locations. This includes ensuring all legal obligations and legislative requirements are met for a number of complex facilities and sites in Edmonton and surrounding area.

As an Environmental Engineer - Water, you will:
  • Provide technical and project support to internal and external project teams for various projects and contribute technical knowledge and site knowledge to expedite the research and innovation within the branch and the organization
  • Manage quality, quantity and discharge of groundwater, surface water, leachate at all Waste Services locations
  • Ensure all regulatory requirements are met including relevant Approval to Operate requirements issued by Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP), and any supplementary associated environmental plans and their implementation
  • Manage, monitor and analyze the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) extensive network of groundwater monitoring wells
  • Identify technical options for plan implementations based on the agreements in place regarding various Waste Services facilities
  • Provide remediation and management of two contaminated sites (Cloverbar and Bremner Lagoons) by ensuring applicable requirements are met
  • Provide technical and project support to internal and external project teams
  • Contribute technical knowledge and site knowledge to expedite the research and innovation within the branch and the organization
  • Provide ENVISO support, wildlife and plant management and any other environmental related activities
  • Supervise EWMC Sampling Group including Engineering Technologists
  • Understand methods and standards for various sampling and analysis requirements and must ensure staff understand and apply these methods
  • Other related duties as required


Qualifications

:
  • Completion of Bachelor's Degree of Engineering in Civil, Environmental or related field
  • Must be a Professional Engineer, or eligible for membership with APEGA
  • 4 years of progressively responsible experience in an industrial and/or municipal setting, preferably in Wastewater/Solid Waste Management field
  • Experience as an environmental engineer or an environmental project manager in landfills (active and/or closed) and experience with contaminated sites is required
  • Experience in environmental management/monitoring would be an asset. Experience working with environmental regulators is considered as an asset
  • Ability to analyze problems, cooperatively develop solutions and provide recommendations to solve problems, particularly relating to solid waste operations/processes and its effects on the environment through land, water and air
  • Excellent project management skills, highly organized, proactively managing projects and operational activities
  • Understanding of the need to meet environmental regulatory compliance and ensure that our operations and processes do not adversely affect the environment
  • Ability to carry out cost/benefit analysis of specific designs, plans, programs and project options
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience in the application of federal and provincial regulations, environmental performance indicators, procedures and processes
  • Ability to manage project meetings, project schedules and expedite consultants and contractors as required
  • Understanding of supervisory skills needed to supervise technical staff
  • Understanding of sampling and analysis methods and standards
  • Strong computer skills, especially related to spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheet), statistical analysis, data management and analysis with potential to use applicable software to manage data
  • A self-starter who is able to work independently under no or minimal supervision required to carry out daily work
  • Ability to inspire and influence others to share vision and goals
  • Ability to research and analyze complex technical issues and develop innovative and practical applications and solutions
  • Exceptionally strong leadership, team building and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong problem solving, decision-making and negotiation skills
  • Customer service oriented with the ability to think strategically and meet corporate and unit mandate and goals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, reporting writing skills, organizational skills, project delivery skills and deal with the highly diverse audiences involved
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate, obtain and maintain cooperation and support from operating personnel as well as other stakeholders
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment specifically when dust, noise and various weather conditions exist
  • Ability to work safely and in compliance with the safety standards and policies outlined by the City and Department is the requirement of the position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • The Edmonton Waste Management Centre has limited public transportation, therefore, supplying one's own car for transportation is required for commuting
