    The Police Communications Branch is seeking applications for twelve (12) Emergency Communication Officer positions. The major responsibilities of these positions include:

  • Evaluating telephone calls received on the Police Emergency and the Police Non Emergency Complaint lines to determine the appropriate level, if any, of police response.
  • Creating events for dispatch using the Police Priority Dispatch System and the Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD).
  • Prioritizing those events that require police response to determine the response criteria of that specific call.
  • Answering the 911 overflow calls and determining the nature of the emergency so the call can be forwarded to the appropriate emergency response partner.
  • Providing information to the general public on police-related matters.
  • Answering the "police only" evaluator line to provide information and assistance to staff calls.
  • Receiving communications on the 911 emergency telephone system.
  • Screening emergency calls utilizing ANI/ALI (Automated Number/Location Identifiers) to confirm location of the emergency.
  • Extending the call to the appropriate emergency response agency.
  • Logging Units on and off.
  • Other related duties as required.

    Qualifications

    :
  • Thorough knowledge of the standards and methods of the Public Safety Communication Sector, including RMS systems, CAD systems, CPIC EPROS systems, and 911 emergency telephone systems.
  • Accurate and efficient typing skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Display a high level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Critical thinking skills and a proven ability to make sound decisions.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Controlled Drugs and Substance Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Province of Alberta Provincial Acts and municipal legislations.
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal government services.
  • Broad knowledge of police practices.
  • Above average geographical knowledge of Edmonton and surrounding areas.
  • Customer service oriented with exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in a written format.
  • Ability to maintain composure and focus while managing high stress potentially life and death situations.
  • Ability to perform duties in a shift work environment (24 /7, 365 days/year)
  • Proficiency in multi-tasking skills is essential.
  • Must meet the minimum hearing criteria as directed by the Police Communications Branch.
  • Applicants will be tested.
  • Probationary period of six (6) months will apply to this position.
  • Successful applicants will be required to attend and successfully complete an 18 week comprehensive training program.
  • THE EDMONTON POLICE SERVICE WILL CONDUCT AN ENHANCED SECURITY CLEARANCE ON THOSE CANDIDATES WHO HAVE BEEN SHORT-LISTED.

  • Job Level:
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent required.
  • Emergency Communications and Response Certificate from a recognized post secondary institution required, along with two (2) years of call evaluating experience or dispatch experience in a public safety communications environment OR three (3) years of recent* police officer experience.
  • within three (3) years of retiring or resigning from a police environment or current call evaluator experience in a police environment.

  • Opportunity Concept Level:

  • Emergency Communications and Response Certificate from a recognized post secondary institution required.

  • Hours of Work:

    40 hours per week (time balanced) 12 hour shifts to provide 24 hour coverage, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

    Salary Range:

    Job Level:
    21B, Salary Grade: 050, $32.98 - $41.24 (Hourly), $2,639.10 - $3,299.90 (Bi-Weekly), $68,881.03 - $86,127.91 (Annually). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton that expired on December 22, 2018.

    Opportunity Concept Level:
    21C, Salary Grade: 023, $27.76 - $31.68 (Hourly), $2,221.20 - $2,534.80 (Bi-Weekly), $57,973.32 - $66,158.28 (Annually). The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton that expired on December 22, 2018.
