Disabled Adult Transit Service (DATS) Operator up to 15 permanent full-time and temporary part-time positions

You will be required to:
  • Safely operate a 25-foot lift-equipped transit vehicle, in high-density traffic, in all weather conditions
  • Provide door to door transportation services while ensuring the safety, comfort and wellness of clients with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, whether on board, boarding or disembarking the transit vehicle
  • Patiently, respectfully and effectively communicate with clients with physical and/or cognitive disabilities in a variety of diverse and challenging situations
  • Follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws, ETS regulations and standards
  • Select the most efficient route using computerized tools and route information to meet timed schedules
  • Monitor fares and follow City of Edmonton cash handling policies Contribute to Edmonton Transit's professional image by demonstrating responsible and ethical behaviour in all of your activities
  • Keep yourself mentally and physically prepared for a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Check the transit vehicle for operational readiness before entering into service

Qualifications

:
  • Grade 12 or General Education Development (GED) or equivalent qualifications and experience
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence or provincial equivalent (non-probationary & non-graduated). Applicants must have held a valid licence for the last 3 consecutive years
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete the Class 4 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license written knowledge test at their own expense, prior to training
  • At least 6 months of experience working with or assisting persons with physical and/or cognitive disabilities
  • Demonstrated success dealing with the public in a position that requires excellent customer service, interpersonal, problem-solving, conflict resolution and independent decision-making skills
  • Ability to understand, speak and write English in order to comprehend Edmonton Transit policies, effectively communicate with the traveling public and report on incidents involving safety and/or service
  • Knowledge of City of Edmonton geography (landmarks, street grid system) and strong map reading skills with the ability to adapt easily to frequently changing schedule
  • Knowledge of Edmonton Transit Services
  • A minimum 5-year Driver's Abstract must be provided showing no more than 3 demerits (or equivalent) and no more than one (1) moving violation within 5 years as well as no past, or pending license suspensions nor Criminal Code suspensions or convictions within 5 years. Non-driving related suspensions of registry services, if indicated, must show a reinstatement date. Demerits reduced by attending a defensive driver training course will not be accepted. A 5-year Driver's Abstract must be obtained within 14 days of the Driving Assessment date
  • Applicants must pass a pre-employment medical examination and Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation physical assessment (FARE), which may include: walking, squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, kneeling, twisting and gripping in order to assess the safe operation of the bus and its controls, and to provide assistance to passengers with mobility aids
  • Selected applicants must pass all assessments and testing
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton at applicant's expense
  • Assets
    • 1 year of experience driving and operating lift-equipped buses and providing transportation service to those that have physical and/or cognitive disabilities Basic computer skills to engage with on-board navigation and to choose shifts
    • Possession of Class 4 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license

Salary:
  • Training Rate: $25.656 (Hourly); Post Training Rate: $28.762 - $33.269 (Hourly)
  • $53,569 - $69,465 (Annually)
