Census Communications Coordinator At City Of Edmonton

The Communications Advisor for Census is responsible to deliver professional level, technically self-sufficient communications work in partnership with the Census Project Team. This includes implementation and ongoing evaluation of the strategic communications plan, messaging, managing media, social media and coordinating with colleagues in Marketing and the Media Relations Unit.
Census communication aims to make residents aware of the census and its importance. A focus for 2019 is moving responses online. The Communications Advisor will also be responsible for creating and implementing a communications plan to attract census workers.
Execution and adaptation of communications plan
  • Lead projects, managing resources and timelines (including an assigned budget). Examples of projects include:
    • Develop and manage census website
    • In cooperation with Marketing, coordinate development of visual identity for the census
    • In cooperation with Marketing, coordinate art and delivery of all collateral, including PIN mailers
    • In cooperation with Marketing, manage recruitment advertising campaign
    • Develop collateral and review messaging for census worker information sessions
    • Work closely with Communications and Engagement team to ensure coordination
    • Review and suggest content for 311 and Call Centre scripts as required, including development of sensitive or complex messaging
    • In cooperation with Marketing, coordinate production of web-based video presentations
    • Work with project team to develop a “storytelling” project report for the 2019 Municipal Census
Media management
  • Manage and coordinate media availabilities as needed, including collateral such as backgrounders and media releases
  • Proactively and reactively manage media relations and inquiries, including development of messaging and preparing spokespeople
  • Work with Media Relations Unit to obtain and track media coverage
  • Provide strategic insight and advice around media relations and coverage
Social media
  • Develop plans and content for City of Edmonton social media channels
  • Work with Media Relations Unit to schedule and respond to social media
  • Maintain any Census-specific social media channels, in coordination with the Media Relations Unit

Qualifications

:
  • University graduation in communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
    OR
  • Diploma in communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
  • Minimum of two years’ progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position with at least two years' communications experience in a similar organisation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability in writing, communications, graphic design coordination, media relations, web content management, social media management, advertising/promotion and print production
  • Knowledge of the requirements of mass communication media
  • Knowledge of marketing, audio-visual and web-based technologies
  • Good background knowledge of allied fields such as social media and web-based communications
  • Superior issues identification, communication planning and issues management skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Assets:
  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS)
  • Media relations and event management experience
