Senior Accounts Payable Specialist At City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County

Job Description

The Finance Department partners with customers to achieve their service goals through sound management of finances. Finance provides strategic financial planning, accounting and reporting services to the city, processes citywide accounts payable and accounts receivables, manages the investment of city funds and issuance of debt instruments, and provides risk control and prevention for the city.

Job Title:

Senior Accounts Payable Specialist

Summary:

The City of Charlotte Finance Department is seeking a Senior Accounts Payable Specialist in the Financial Services Division. Accounts Payable is responsible for processing payments to vendors for goods and services provided to the City.

This position serves as member of the Accounts Payable Team which consists of the AP Supervisor, AP Team Lead, Accounting Technicians and Senior Accounts Payable Specialists. This position reports to the AP Supervisor.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare / examine / analyze accounting metrics assessing accuracy / completeness / conformance / procedural standards
  • Use relevant information & individual judgment to determine if payments comply with:
    • procedures
    • policies
    • government regulations
    • taxes
    • workflow rules
    • other ERP requirements
  • Process invoices & adjustments for payment in City’s ERP system ensuring City’s compliance for financial policies
  • Calculate taxes & applying discounts on payments / ensuring compliance with payment requirements
  • Resolve three-way-match discrepancies / tax issues / budget errors
  • Reconcile vendor statements & monitoring outstanding invoices / payment history validating payments made within terms
  • Provide timely assistance to internal & external customers
  • Manage multi-line internal & external Call Center / Customer Service email box
  • Serve as subject matter expert for AP financial system & assist ERP Support with work order resolution through functional & user acceptance testing
  • Provide backup in other areas of department
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic accounting knowledge
  • Analytical skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Excellent ten-key & keyboard skills
  • Strong written & oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets developing account reconciliations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) experience
  • Two or more years of experience in automated accounting environment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED with one or more years of relevant work experience; or an Associate’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

Salary:

  • $36,776 - $45,970; Commensurate with Experience
