Traffic Engineering Technician 1 At City of Calgary

The Traffic Engineering Technician 1 position provides technical support and assistance under the direction of the appropriate supervisor in the various sections of the Roads Traffic Division, such as: Traffic Management Centre, Detours Roadway Operations, Traffic Control Parking, Operational Improvements, Traffic Safety, and Traffic Field Operations. In this role, you will provide support to the Traffic division in Roads. You will be responsible for the safe movement of all users of the transportation network. Primary duties include:
  • Perform data collection and analysis.
  • Research and identify problems; prepare signage and road marking plans (temporary and permanent) for a variety of interesting internal and external projects, ranging from new subdivisions to new schools.
  • Respond to concerns of the general public, elected officials and other City staff, received through 3-1-1, email, and telephone. Provide responses in writing (email or technical memorandum) or verbally.
  • Issue permits, manage incidents, and publish traveler information.
  • Review and implementation of parking changes. Monitor tunnel operations and dispatch field crews.
Working Conditions: Exposure to various weather conditions, heavy traffic, and active construction sites.
Qualifications
  • A completed 2 year Technical Engineering diploma and up to 1 year of traffic engineering technician experience.
  • Knowledge of, and experience using, Geographical Information System (GIS) software, and basic proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook).
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending. Reliable access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the needs of all users of the transportation network, City policies and bylaws, technical standards and professional practices is required.
  • Experience using Work Order system and Traffic Management Centre (TMC) related software and systems, and knowledge of traffic engineering will be considered assets.
  • You demonstrate excellent communication skills, with a customer service focus; strong analyzing and problem solving skills; and the ability to work with field crews and in a fast paced environment.
  • Analyzing data and recommending alternative solutions, ability to listen and empathize with concerns expressed by others.
Pre-employment Requirements
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: Pay Grade 8 $33.29 - 44.52 per hour (2017 rates)
Days of Work: This position works a 5 day
work week with one day off in a 3 week cycle.

Hours of work: Standard 37.5 hours/ 20 hours per week (Part-Time)
