Traction Power Engineer At City of Calgary

Calgary Transit plans, designs, operates, maintains and improves the City's entire public transportation system, including a growing fleet of buses, a Light Rail Transit (LRT) network, and accessible public transportation for people with disabilities. The Traction Power Engineer is responsible for developing budgets, preventative maintenance systems and processes, systems improvements, analysis and mitigation of systems failures, and maintenance of engineering records. Primary duties include:
  • Enhance the safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of the traction power system by initiating designs and implementing modifications to the substations, overhead catenary and power distribution subsystems.
  • Provide design consultation, specification reviews, and as-built inspections for traction power as well as LRT extension projects and upgrades.
  • Research and develop data models collected during Calgary Transit’s monthly Calgary Transit SCOUT runs, High Rail & Walking Patrols – analyzing information and using it to assist the Sr. Engineer in advancing the preventive asset maintenance programs.
  • Perform life cycle analysis and monitor LRT traction power system infrastructure to achieve optimum safety and service levels.
  • Manage and coordinate capital projects. Identify and prioritize investments in the existing infrastructure to ensure the traction power system continues to serve LRT operations in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Engineering or a related field and current licensure as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or licensure by the first day of work plus a minimum of three years of relevant experience as a Professional Engineer.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications along with an ability to use data to develop and train models to automate analytical analysis implementing Machine Learning (ML) concepts.
  • Previous experience in railroad traction power design, construction and maintenance in an urban transit rail environment is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings and work within a team environment; excellent technical analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, detail oriented mind set and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Candidates with lesser experience may be considered at a lower level.

Days of Work: This position works a 5 day
work week with one day off in a 3 week cycle.
