4th Class Operating Engineer/Refinery Operator At Bunge

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Job Description

Position Summary:

Reporting to the production manager, this position is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the refinery processes and safe operations of boiler and ammonia systems. Normal hours of work will be on a Thursday to Monday 08:00 to 16:00 basis unless when providing vacation relief coverage. Shift schedules may change on a frequent basis as required by the business.


The position of 4th Class Operating Engineer /Operator – is a unionized (Teamsters Local 647) hourly paid position. Current negotiated hourly rate is $36.55, any future wage increases are determined by the CBA.


Core Functions:

  • Safely operate steam boilers, compressors and refrigeration plant.
  • Operating refinery processes – loading/unloading, refining, bleaching and deodorizing
  • Perform preventive and emergency maintenance on steam and utility system components.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and manufacturing teams to ensure all utility and processing equipment is operating at peak efficiency.
  • Log daily work effort and failure causes for prompt corrective measures to be taken.
  • Maintain powerhouse equipment records as required for a food processing facility.
  • Inspects, tests and performs minor maintenance on boilers and associated equipment as well as fire protection equipment.
  • The position requires a conscientious person in the areas of operational procedures, quality control & testing, good manufacturing practices (GMP), reporting, safety & housekeeping.
  • Participate in various safety related and technical training.


Work Hours: 40 hours/week. Must be able to work overtime as required. The Company reserves the right to alter the starting and quitting times as well as the working schedules for the efficient operation of the business.


Skill/Experience Requirements:

  • This position requires a minimum 4th Class Power (Operating) Engineers Certificate of Ontario
  • Demonstrate ability to perform refinery processes
  • Demonstrated ability to perform operating and maintenance tasks
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess a current and valid driver's license in the province of Ontario (Class G or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of Food Safety Programs (HACCP and GMP) is an asset.
  • Prior experience in an industrial setting 2 to 5 years.
  • Able to communicate with colleagues and provide a safe working mentality on the job.
  • Experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting piping systems such as remove and replace worn components, do general maintenance work and work on plant shut-downs.
  • Experience in the following area: Preventative Maintenance and hand tools.
  • Use testing equipment to check systems for leaks.
  • Knowledge of Predictive Maintenance techniques and practices
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must have maintenance/repair tools
  • Ability to climb and work on ladders.
  • Ability to work at height.
  • Medically fit to wear respirator
  • Able to work in confined spaces that have been correctly permitted and monitored for vessel entry.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, stoop or kneel for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to wear standard required PPE as required: safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hat.
  • Ability to wear specialized PPE as required: fall arrest harness and lanyard, respirator.
