Staff Accountant- Reconciliation At Assurant

Location: Miami, Florida

Job Description

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES

The accountant provides accurate and timely financial information to internal/external customers, Segment and Corporate management, and to regulatory agencies as representation for the Recon CoE. The position requires understanding of balance sheet reconciliations and can serve as subject matter expert in support of those reconciliations. They must be able to interpret and identify gaps in the process and close/remediate open items timely as outlined in the reconciliation policy or escalate as deemed necessary. The accountant is familiar with a variety of process concepts, best practices and procedures.

Position will cultivate a continuous improvement culture, promote ongoing learning and exhibit a high level of engagement in a fast-paced F&A shared services environment.

The ideal candidate must be able to contribute to the Shared Service strategy and execution by applying knowledge and experience.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Extensive knowledge on balance sheet reconciliations
  • Preparation of reconciliations as assigned within BlackLine both timely and accurately according to the Assurant Balance Sheet policy
  • Effective in closing out aged balances within sixty days, otherwise execute escalation procedures
  • Is considered a technical expert in areas of responsibilities and can ensure requirements are understood and met by internal and external resources
  • Carries out accounting assignments that are varied and possibly difficult
  • Interacts and aids with accounting and reporting work and activities performed by segment
  • Develop and maintain relationships with business segments and stakeholders
  • Communicates effectively with key stakeholders on resolving open items within the reconciliation on a routine and monthly basis
  • Assists in monitoring key performance indicators
  • Collaborates with contributors and coworkers to identify, propose and implement approved issue resolution alternatives
  • Assist AFS management to help build AFS Brand. Identify and communicate areas of inconsistency, offer alternative solutions for improvement in quality and process
  • Ability to work with other internal departments to resolve process or system issues
  • Understands strategy and is appropriately connected to strategy through operating goals and measurements
  • Support strategic and work projects as appropriate
  • Creates and maintains SOP’s related to reconciliation and/or other accounting functions
  • Organize data and analyze reconciliation results via Blackline reports to management

Education and Experience

  • BA or BS in Accounting, Finance or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of general accounting experience, insurance preferred
  • 2+ years working in a shared services environment preferred
  • Blackline a plus
  • CPA a plus

  • Knowledge and Skills
  • Understanding of progressive accounting practices and procedures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically excel and power point
  • Knowledge of financial practices (GAAP and STAT)
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements (i.e. MAR, SOX, audits)
  • Problem analysis and resolution at a functional level – detail and results oriented
  • Ability to influence peers within department and segments, building effective relationships in a multi-site, multi-function environment with the complexities of meeting the diverse needs of multiple business lines
  • Ability to multi-task, work well under pressure and perform in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational abilities with a high level of written and interpersonal communications skills in order to communicate effectively with various levels of management and staff personnel
