Overview

Internships at ACF provide an opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in community philanthropy and insight into the nonprofit sector that can only be obtained through participating in the industry’s work. ACF’s internships are thoughtfully designed to help you build your career while making a lasting impact on the local community. Internship opportunities are available in all of the foundation’s business units, including philanthropy, community, information services, finance, investments, and communications. Interns gain professional skills in project planning, teamwork, and interpersonal communication, as well as other specialized skills depending on the intern’s placement within ACF. Additionally, interns gain exposure to a fast-paced, collaborative office environment and develop experience working on a variety projects with our experienced team of professionals. Internships will culminate with a final project presentation to ACF’s executive leadership team. Internships are typically structured as eight-week, part-time placements (25 hours per week).


Essential Job Functions

Reporting to the Controller, Accounting Interns will provide support to projects in the areas of finance and human resources. Typical duties include:


  • Assist in the preparation of financial information for monthly and quarterly reports and dashboards.
  • Manage and proof the financial data component of monthly fund statements.
  • Assist with preparation of the annual audit, IRS Form(s) 990, and the annual report.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports as requested by staff and donors.
  • Perform ad hoc account analyses and special projects as delegated by management.
  • Work closely with ACF business units on finance tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Perform backup accounting functions for cash receipts and cash disbursements and other areas within the finance department.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts as needed.
  • Collect, assemble, and analyze data to assist in resolving procedural, operational, and other work-related problems.
  • Design and revise forms for records and reports.
  • Attend training sessions and meetings as directed.
  • Enter data and maintain files and records.
  • Conduct research as directed.
  • Assist with human resources administration activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the area of nonprofit administration, accounting, or a related field.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Some experience in an office environment preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Solid organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated with a desire to learn.

Benefits

This internship will enable the successful candidate to obtain valuable specialized experience in nonprofit administration. A stipend will be paid bi-monthly for the duration of the internship. This position may satisfy requirements for earning college credit.
