Engineer in Training (New Graduate Program) At AESO

The Alberta Electric System Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market which, in 2017, had 291 participants and approximately $3 Billion in annual energy transactions.

Summary of Position:
The AESO is currently recruiting for a full time position as a part of the New Graduate Engineer in Training (EIT) program that involves 4 six month rotations through different business units involved in the engineering aspects of the AESO’s work. Upon completion of the rotation final placement is made to an engineering role and department. In the New Graduate EIT role duties will include those tasks assigned by various business units. Assignments will be technical in nature, varied and will include opportunities to work with experienced engineering professionals and other AESO staff in a variety of cross-functional assignments.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter and creative thinker with an appetite for continuous learning and possessing good written and oral communications skills.

Accountabilities:

Under the supervision of an Engineer or Senior Engineer, the EIT assignments may include some or all of the following:

• Assist with the preparation of power system models
• Conduct power system load flow, stability and short circuit studies
• Prepare power system modeling base cases
• Assist in carrying out power system contingency analysis
• Prepare one-line drawings and documentation for estimate requests
• Assist with determination of alternative solutions for identified power system problems
• Assist with the preparation of information for stakeholder meetings
• Assist with technical support to various departments
• Assist with preparation of special studies
• Assist with preparation of project functional specifications
• Preparation of reports following the completion of each rotation

Education:

• Undergraduate degree in Electrical or Power engineering and registered (or eligible for registration) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta as an EIT.

Job Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess the following credentials, skills and attributes:

• Recent graduate from a recognized, accredited University

• Related engineering co-op experience would be considered an asset
• Strong organizational, problem solving and multi-tasking skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and a positive can-do attitude
• Results-oriented, hands-on self-starter who works effectively in a team setting
